Sixth Extinction?

Are humans the cause of the extinction of other species?

  1. While humans are not the sole cause of the extinction of other species, they certainly play a part. Human pollution, for example, makes many ecosystems harder to live in. The expansion of civilization destroys environments and habitats needed for species survival. Humans also require large amounts of food and animal/plant resources to maintain life (much more than any other species). Humans certainly make it harder for animals to thrive, destroying habitats, corrupting areas, and spreading greed (which often backfires and destroys species).

  2. Humans are probably the most harmful species to other organisms because of all the fishing, hunting, deforestation and other acts of destruction we cause. We destroy ecosystems and pollute others, causing harm to native species - we are actually a very big problem to the other organisms on this planet. Some examples of our destruction are the Amazon rainforest, the coral reef in Australia, and until recently, the kelp forests off the west coast of the US.

  3. Humans are not completely the cause of nor are always involved in the extinction of other species, but oftentimes we are a major factor. Our poor habits of taking over other species' habitats have made it impossible for some of those species to adapt to new habitats, driving them to extinction. An example of this would be the rainforest. Daily, acres upon acres are lost, driving out thousands of different organisms in the forest. Building harbors and bays oftentimes damages reefs.
